“The “People’s Party” is clearly out of touch with the actual American people—a fact they continue to ignore while pushing their agendas.”
Republican Karen Handel has defeated Democratic nominee Jon Ossoff in a special election in Georgia’s 6th Congressional district. Despite being the most expensive United States House race in American history, Republicans maintained control of the seat, which had opened up after Tom Price accepted the position of Secretary of Health and Human Services in President Trump’s administration.
An estimated $55 million was spent by both candidates and outside groups, with the majority of the funds dedicated to the failed plan of getting Ossoff elected so the DNC could “#FlipItBlue” and “send a message to the GOP.” However, what they failed to see here is the same thing they failed to see in the 2016 election—their message and desires do not represent the values, wants, and needs of the American people.
In their desperation to signal their resistance to President Trump and the GOP, twice the money that was spent on the next most expensive campaign in history was spent in an attempt to get a 30-year-old documentary filmmaker elected in a historically conservative district.
In comparison, Karen Handel, who easily defeated Ossoff, has a fairly long history in Georgia politics. The Ossoff campaign alone raised $23.6 million, while Handel raised only $4.5 million. A huge portion of money coming into Georgia to get Ossoff elected came from outside sources in California, New York, and Massachusetts. Only 14 percent of the total itemized contributions to the Ossoff came from the people he claimed to represent—the residents of Georgia.
In contrast, 56% of Handel’s came from inside Georgia. This isn’t to say that the Republican candidate didn’t also benefit from outside sources; the Congressional Leadership Fund, the National Republican Congressional Committee, and other groups spent $18.2 million on the Handel campaign. However, it was quite clear that Democrats unable to even vote in the election went all-in on trying to buy the votes of a population disgusted by their politics.
The DNC assumed that because Donald Trump won the district by a much smaller margin than previous Republican candidates for president, the people of the Atlanta suburbs were ready to embrace a liberal agenda and the DNC platform. However, they completely ignored the fact that while the margin was smaller, President Trump still won the district.
While polls in the district showed that people there disapproved of President Trump, they did not show an embrace of the Democratic party’s agenda. While voters may or may not embrace one individual, they do support the morals and values of an organization as a whole. The Democrats just can’t seem to understand how anybody could not embrace their “enlightened” agenda, dreamed up by elites far removed from the average American.
The problem of reality for the DNC isn’t just limited to Georgia. In their most recent filing with the Federal Election Commission, the Democrats reported their lowest monthly fundraising performance since 2009. They raised $4.29 million in the month of May, while also reporting being $1.9 million in debt for the month. This contrasts with the GOP’s filing, which showed them raising $10.9 million and demonstrated the continuing trend of off-election-year fundraising continuing to grow steadily. They also claimed no debt for the month of May. The “People’s Party” is clearly out of touch with the actual American people—a fact they continue to ignore while pushing their agendas.
