Elected officials taking to the airwaves to criticize President Donald Trump during the global coronavirus pandemic are not helping their people, only helping themselves, with opportunistic political attacks, former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich told Newsmax TV.
“Historically, war time presidents have enjoyed a helpful, working relationship with governors from the opposition party,” Blagojevich told Wednesday’s “Greg Kelly Reports,” echoing his op-ed written this week.
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker is one of the biggest offenders of being offensive amid the crisis, according to Blagojevich, who was the governor of the state before being imprisoned for a pay for play conviction. Trump has since commuted his sentence and Blagojevich is now at home in Illinois.
“The governor in my state, Gov. Pritzker has decided to somehow find the time during this crisis – and it’s a crisis in Illinois as well – to go on the national morning talk shows and to begin hurling partisan political attacks at President Trump,” Blagojevich told Kelly. “This is unhelpful; it’s hurtful for our country.
“What he ought to do is get to work and stop trying to scapegoat the president when he’s got all kinds of things he could be doing here for the people of Illinois – like extending sick pay to workers who can’t go to work now.”
