President Donald Trump’s former chief medical adviser is giving the administration kudos for its reaction to the coronavirus pandemic.
“He started off very aggressive, locking our borders down to certain areas in China and then following that up with a restriction on travel from Europe. He’s restricted travel from our northern and our southern borders now. He’s made all the right decisions. He’s got private industry involved in this. He’s basically cleared the field for American innovation and public sector genius in this to help us come up with a solution. … I think it was a shame early on where people were trying to use this for political gain. We’ve got past that for the most part. The president is doing a fantastic job and he has provided a very measured, calculated approach to this that has been just right based on the circumstances required.”
Trump has taken criticism for his response to the pandemic, particularly from Democrats.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has consistently berated Trump for a slow federal response, and earlier this week called on Trump to send medically trained soldiers to his city to address escalating shortages amid the outbreak.
Jackson, a retired U.S. Navy rear admiral, told Spicer it wasn’t the right time to send in the U.S. military.
“I think the president will make that call if and when we’re there. I think the mayor is getting ahead of things there,” he said.
“I think there are a lot of good state and local officials out there that are following the president’s guidance on this and that are allowing him to lead the way on this. I wish the mayor would do the same. We’re not there yet.”
