Retailers Drop Ivanka Trump’s Fashion Line

Nordstrom, a high-end chain store, recently announced that it will no longer carry Ivanka Trump’s clothing line. Upon the announcement, President Donald Trump took to Twitter to defend his daughter. He called Nordstrom’s action unfair and stated that Ivanka is a good person. While many have speculated that dropping Ivanka Trump’s clothing line was politically motivated, the representatives from Nordstrom have not deviated from their original explanation. Five other retailers have also decided to drop her brand. Stores have even been directed to shift displays and take down any labels with her name on it.

Nordstrom had previously released a statement in support of those affected by President Trump’s travel policies. They also cited low sales as being the reason for not continuing to carry Ms. Trump’s clothing line. While it seems like that could be a possibility, it is also important to consider the boycott movement promoted by the website grabyourwallet.org. Grab Your Wallet maintains a list of companies and brands associated with the Trump name and asks that consumers refrain from doing any business that will benefit the companies linked to the Trump name. Visitors to the website can find all of the retailers that carry Ivanka Trump’s brand. Nordstrom is located on that list. Places like Marshall’s and Walmart are also on there, as some of the more affordable stores to purchase items from.

Either way, Ivanka Trump is not her father. She has been a strong advocate for women and her voice has been an invaluable for issues that women care about, such as maternity leave. She lends her voice to these causes because she truly believes in them and they affect her own life. As a businesswoman and mother, she has been a success. One of the admirable qualities about Ivanka Trump is her willingness to promote positivity and encouragement among career women; especially working mothers who often fall short of feeling empowered. In fact, the mission statement for her business ventures includes a desire to make an impact in the lives of professional women.

Ivanka Trump has created a brand based on honorable intentions, from a fashion line to provide business attire that caters to women who are buying for themselves, to a jewelry collection with the same purpose. She has also spoken about the importance of equal and fair wages for women. It seems like a lot of the good work she’s done has gotten lost in translation.

While the country remains in a state of political unrest, many just want to move forward. Reaching out to attack family members of policy makers is not only damaging, but counterproductive. These are people with children, families, and friends too, just like the average citizen. Taking aggression so far as to call upon people to damage someone’s business and reputation based on decisions they did not make is reckless. Of course, no one will ever outright admit that discrimination based upon one’s political beliefs is a thing. Where does the line get drawn? Regardless of President Trump’s actions, members of his family should be left out of the fallout. Clearly, that isn’t going to be the case for Ivanka Trump.
