Netflix Creates Space Force Comedy with Steve Carell

By: - February 1, 2019

There is no shortage of jokes surrounding the newest branch of the U.S. armed forces, the Space Force. In 2018, President Trump announced his intention to create the Space Force and tasked Pentagon leadership with figuring out a plan to make it happen.

In addition to being the “final frontier,” space is becoming an increasingly vital asset to maintaining awareness of global issues and being ready to address them. As technology becomes more advanced, so too must our country’s capabilities to manage them (and stay apprised of our adversaries’ capabilities as well).

Netflix, an established name in TV and movie on-demand streaming, is getting onboard and creating a show centered on the newest military branch.

A Comedy Dream-Team

“Space Force” will star Steve Carell (“The Office” and “The 40-Year-Old Virgin”) and be co-produced by the actor,  and also star Greg Daniels, who also worked with Carell on “The Office.”

The show “is described as a workplace comedy centered around the people tasked with creating a sixth branch of the armed services—Space Force,” according to the Hollywood Reporter. “The Office” ran for nine successful seasons, focusing on workplace antics of a mid-size paper company.

“The goal of the new branch is ‘to defend satellites from attack’ and ‘perform other space-related tasks,’” read the teaser-trailer released by Netflix on Twitter in January. Set to epic music and featuring the space horizon, it sounds pretty serious, right?

“Or something,” the trailer continued, hinting at its comedic take on the newest branch of the military. “This is the story of the men and women who have to figure it out.”

The series will not showcase an established service, with high-tech equipment and efficient procedures in place. Instead, it will include the bumbling antics and missteps of those tasked with creating the Space Force. If the cast of characters on “The Office” is any indication of the type we can expect to see in Carell and Daniels’ newest project, we are in for a comedic treat.

Fans are Already Onboard

The reactions from fans are no less hilarious.

“So basically it’s office space?” tweeted @calikal1 in response to CNN’s coverage of Netflix’s announcement.

Many linked to clips from “The Office” or Carell’s other projects. “An office is a place where dreams come true,” Carell can be seen saying as his character Michael Scott, Regional Manager.

Others wondered if Netflix’s forays into original shows such as “Space Force” are behind the announced price increases. But most were just fine with the increases for the promise of a show like “Space Force.”

A release date has not been given for the series, but the Hollywood Reporter did cite that the show has been approved for a straight-to-series release. An exact number of episodes has not been announced either. But with Carell and Daniels collaborating on the project based on an issue that is already full of comedic fodder, viewers are very excited about the eventual release.
