Oberlin College Must Pay Out Millions for its Racist Lies About a Local Business

By: - June 12, 2019

Not long ago, I wrote about an alleged “racism” incident involving students from Ohio’s Oberlin College. Students, who happened to be African American, pleaded guilty to shoplifting and presenting false I.D. at Gibson’s, a venerable local food mart and bakery, in business operating since the mid-19th century.

Oberlin as a university, through its students, faculty, and administrators, rather than ashamed of their criminal behavior, instead defended the students and accused the store’s owners and staff of racism. (I have no idea what political beliefs the Gibson’s owner or staff hold. I have a feeling Oberlin doesn’t either—and didn’t care.)

Well, not only did the arrested and charged students plead guilty but, as I wrote, “they [the students] also issued statements saying the incident involved no racism.” But that was not good enough for Oberlin’s neo-leftist elite. That result did not fit their narrative, so they attacked the business, intent on destroying it.

In an outcome that shows all people should “resist” leftist bully tactics, a court has ordered Oberlin College to pay Gibson’s Food Mart and Bakery $11 million.

And that payment is not all the radical students, faculty, and administrators have done to damage their beloved college. Enrollment at Oberlin College is dropping. Legalinssurection.com reports, “According to a report in the Oberlin Review, the student newspaper, Enrollment Drop Creates Financial Shortfall.”

Legalinssurection.com added, “At U. Missouri and Evergreen State College (WA), similar high-profile social justice activism damaged enrollment. Not surprisingly a hostile environment turned off non-radical student prospects. That may be happening at Oberlin.”

In another blow, Americanthinker.com reports, “The insurer that covers Oberlin College for liability, Lexington Insurance Company, filed documents with court last month indicating that its umbrella liability policy would not cover costs of any judgment for the plaintiffs.”

Uh-oh!

In addition, punitive damages could push the award to over $22 million. Hopefully, this will inform the neo-leftists on America’s liberal university campuses that the entire nation hasn’t bought into their anti-American lunacy. We’ll see if this award does anything to tamp down Oberlin’s apparent official policy of intolerance, lies, and bullying of people who refuse to think as they do.

If they don’t, Oberlin College may want to plan again on opening up their coffers and closing their doors.
