Mexican soldiers confronted two armed American soldiers and removed a weapon from one soldier. The Mexican soldiers had thought that the American soldiers had crossed into Mexico’s territory. Problem is, the Mexican soldiers had actually crossed over into a remote part of Texas.
Reportedly, the Mexican soldiers pointed their assault rifles at the American troops. After removing a pistol from one of the American soldiers, the Mexican military members threw the weapon into a U.S. government vehicle. Fortunately, the incident didn’t escalate any further and after a brief discussion, the Mexican troops departed.
So why’d the incident occur in the first place? The American soldiers were accused of being on the “wrong side” of the nearby border wall. The wall, however, was built just north of the border, so the soldiers were still technically on American soil. The incident had happened on April 13th.
The incident demonstrates how complicated building a border wall can be. In some cases, the terrain or other factors may not allow for the wall to be built right on the border. Jurisdiction could quickly become quite confusing.
The soldiers were members of U.S. Northern Command. This military unit has been providing military support for U.S. Customs and Border Protection. President Trump has been trying to leverage the American military to secure the border in the face of a huge surge of illegal immigrants.
So far, the Mexican government has not publicly responded to the incident. As more Mexican and American troops patrol the border, looking out for both migrants and drug runners, the risks of further confrontations could rise.
