Though they are often misconstrued as evil, semi-automatic rifles can be a great asset…
Three men broke into a home in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and were met with a man defending his property and family with an AR-15 style firearm. Now, if you listen to the anti-gun community, this type of firearm has no place in a home (or anywhere else, for that matter).
Yet when these three criminals broke in, dressed all in black and armed with a knife and brass knuckles, they were met with just that– an AR-15. The weapon was wielded by the 23-year-old son of the homeowner wary of recent break-ins in the area. After what was reported as a brief exchange of words, the three criminals were shot. All three died on the scene.
The AR-15 is a very capable firearm, with lots of firepower and the ability to carry multiple rounds. Typical magazines hold thirty rounds of ammunition, but can range anywhere from five up to one-hundred. But for the sake of weight and movement, a thirty round magazine or under would be best for home defense.
What this incident demonstrates is the fact that, with the right training and safety precautions, the AR-15 is a fine home defense firearm and should not be thought of as the “evil rifles” that many misinterpret them to be. This flawed line of thinking shows a lack of knowledge on the topic and a dearth of openness to reality – the reality being that not all people use firearms for evil purposes. In fact, the vast majority use these rifles for lawful reasons: self-defense, hunting, target shooting, and other sports involving firearms. In this case, the use of force in self-defense kept a family safe. This was only possible because they had the foresight to arm themselves and learn how to use the firearm responsibly.
So the next time you hear that AR-15’s should never be used for home defense, just point them to the young man in Wagoner County, Oklahoma who defeated 3 intruders because he had the right firearm with the right firepower.
