Only in today’s lefty courts of America can an attempted murderer’s parents profit from their adult son’s criminal actions and death.
I have seen and heard many things in my three decades as a cop, plus my military time. However, I recently heard that Michael Brown’s parents settled a lawsuit against the city of Ferguson for their son’s death.
These are the same parents of an 18-year-old adult who attacked and arguably tried to seriously injure or kill a police officer. The police officer was cleared in the shooting, as it was ruled justified. Yet even though justified and found lawful, the officer had to quit and move out of town for the safety of his own family. These are the same parents who, after the shooting incited violence, said, “Let’s burn this m——- down.”
The fact that a wrongful death lawsuit was even entertained shows how backward our system has become. How our courts have gotten this out of whack and lean in such a direction as to allow these frivolous lawsuits to be entertained at all is a shame.
How can we expect to move forward and hold people accountable for their actions if we allow people to profit from someone else committing a felony (and attempted murder, in this case)? The city of Ferguson should have told the parents a few things when they brought the lawsuit. One, your son was committing felony battery on a police officer when he was shot, so you do not have any reason to sue the city. Second, how and why should you be allowed to profit off the justified shooting of your adult son based on his actions? Third, the court ruled that the shooting was justified and legal, so you have no basis for your lawsuit other than to try and profit off of your son’s crime.
Do police ever wrongly injure or shoot someone? Of course, it happens. When it does, the price should be high. However, when police are found to have acted within the scope of their job and the laws, then the government they work for should back them. The courts should be less opinionated and more “blind” like justice is supposed to be.
What the city of Ferguson just did by settling this lawsuit was set a precedent for all future shootings that police officers are involved in. Whether justified or not, lawful or not, they have now shown that it doesn’t matter. If you want to file a suit and make money off a criminal action, you will be paid.
So to those cops out there still in the profession, just do what is right, just, and legal, and don’t worry about the lawsuits. To the city of Ferguson, you have set a precedent that will now forever be known as the one that started the trend—the trend of murderers, terrorists, and others suing the government when they are justifiably injured or killed while committing felony crimes. Only in America.
