In Defense of the ‘Deep State’

By: - February 2, 2018

“The qualities that these politicians attribute to the Deep State can be found among themselves. Don’t blame the government employees. If there is a Deep State conspiracy to be found, it is among politicians and their donors.”

What a conspiracy we face. Fanatically anti-Trump government officials, holdovers from a previous administration, embedded in the very fabric of our government, working tirelessly to overthrow the duly elected President of the United States. A coup if there ever was one. What are the American people to make of this? If you are a Trump supporter you see the truth of this conspiracy in so many actions of the federal government and the press. If you are anti-Trump, you see fake news, a conspiracy theory pedaled by those trying to draw attention away from criminal activity of the administration.

What is the truth?

Unfortunately, as with most things political, the truth is the main casualty of this battle. Along with the truth, the federal government as a whole is a casualty as well. As the attacks against the “Deep State” continue to escalate, there is a growing perception that the government itself is the problem, that it is populated by treasonous personnel, answerable to no one but themselves, working toward their own, mysterious ends.

I have heard some remarkable theories that I would be embarrassed to mention here, and just when I think these theories cannot get any more outlandish a new one crops up. Ladies and gentlemen, nothing could be further from the truth.

The government is populated by Democrats and Republicans, conservatives and liberals, human beings in general, Americans in particular. They work every day to carry out the policies of whatever government is in power regardless of their personal and political beliefs. They keep the parks open, your drinking water clean, they issue your passports, arrest criminals and terrorists, and defend this nation – with their lives if necessary. They work hard to stay out of the numerous political storms that wash across this nation and they stay within the law. They keep the government running despite the best efforts of politicians to shut it down and lend continuity to U.S. policy that would be sorely lacking otherwise.

Americans should be thankful for this “Deep State,” thankful for the men and women who keep this country safe and functioning in a variety of ways, some of which you don’t even notice or take for granted. These men and women are like you, like the rest of America; loyal, patriotic, raising families and trying to do their best. They may falter at times, stumble, make mistakes – they are after all just human – but in general they are successful. They are honorable people.

What they don’t do is conspire against the legally elected president and government of the United States. There are no secret societies among government employees, or subsets thereof, that meet to promulgate secret policies and undermine presidents. I highly doubt that government employees could keep it secret if there was such a society.

These men and women are like you, like the rest of America; loyal, patriotic, raising families and trying to do their best. They may falter at times, stumble, make mistakes – they are after all just human – but in general they are successful. They are honorable people.

I hate to burst your bubble, but there is no “Deep State” conspiracy in the federal government.

The real problem, the real Deep State, lies with the politicians. Not all, there are some good ones, but with the majority. Time and again they fail to do their jobs, to pass a budget to allow the government to function efficiently. They work to undermine any administration of an opposing political party. They divide the nation with inflammatory and hyperbolic rhetoric, and demonize anyone who disagrees with them. They politicize everything rather than working together for the benefit of the many. They remain loyal to themselves and their donors, focused on staying in power at all costs, rather than serving the American people. They view compromise, one of the most essential elements of democracy, as evil, and have adopted a winner take all attitude. Moderation is being destroyed and replaced with extremism. They lie to you because they no longer respect you. They have sold themselves and America to the donor class.

The qualities that these politicians attribute to the Deep State can be found among themselves. Don’t blame the government employees. If there is a Deep State conspiracy to be found, it is among politicians and their donors.
