A New Mexico man, Larry Mitchell Hopkins allegedly claimed that his militia group has been training to assassinate prominent liberals. Former President Barack Obama, George Soros, and Hillary Clinton were reportedly among the targets on the militia’s short list. The group, the United Constitutional Patriots (UCP), has made headlines recently for detaining migrants on the southern border.
So why did Hopkins want to assassinate Soros, Obama, and Clinton? Apparently, they made his murder list due to alleged support for anti-fascist activists (antifa). Hopkins allegedly made the threats out loud, although it’s unclear who he spoke to—perhaps undercover agents.
Hopkins is the national commander of the United Constitutional Patriots, an alt-right militia group that has been actively detaining migrants on the southern border. The group claims that it has detained over 5,600 migrants over the last two months alone. The American Civil Liberties Union has labeled the group as a fascist militia.
Kelly O’Connell, the militia’s lawyer, has flatly denied claims that the militia was planning to kill anyone. According to O’Connell, militia members are not pointing guns at anyone or breaking any laws when they detain migrants. The UCP has come under fire from New Mexico government officials for detaining immigrants.
PayPal and GoFundMe have banned the UCP, which had previously been raising funds through the platforms. Thousands of dollars were raised. The move came after the group shared videos of their members rounding up migrants to be turned over to Border Patrol agents. The group has allegedly claimed that they are in direct contact with President Donald Trump. This, however, seems highly unlikely.
