Los Angeles Passes Resolution Making Public Schools Sanctuary Spaces

By: - May 10, 2017

“Resolutions such as this effectively teach school children that certain groups are above the law and shouldn’t have to follow the rules.”

The public school system in Los Angeles has passed a resolution making public school campuses sanctuaries for illegal immigrants who face deportation. A measure was already passed last year designating Los Angeles public schools safe spaces for illegal immigrants and their families. Although that resolution already exists, the latest measure offers an added layer of protection for those in the United States illegally. Schools cannot inquire about students’ and their families’ immigration status. The district also has plans to educate students and their families about their rights when dealing with law enforcement.

The resolution comes after parents have found themselves arrested by ICE while dropping off and picking up their children from school. This has caused fear to spread throughout the immigrant community, especially among those who remain undocumented. This is yet another act of defiance in the face of President Donald Trump to protest his immigration policies.

While it’s been reiterated over and over, to the point of beating a dead horse, many still fail to understand that President Trump has taken a hardline stance against criminals who are in the United States illegally. That seems to have sparked outrage among the people of California, because the state has been incredibly hostile ever since the election.

From refusing to allow conservative speakers to participate on campuses to protecting illegal immigrants, it’s almost like citizens have gone out of their way to be difficult children throwing temper tantrums. Even as many sob stories have graced headlines and social media platforms, they’re countered with police reports to the contrary.

In fact, in light of the Trump administration’s implementation of reports directly relating to crimes committed by illegal immigrants, the United States has had more access to the compiled statistics of what is actually happening. Certain areas have blown everything out of proportion and created a hostile environment for immigrants and ICE agents alike. With regular attacks on ICE agents coming down from mayors and other political authorities, it’s become increasingly difficult for them to carry out the jobs they were hired to do.

Under constant scrutiny, ICE agents have come under fire for everything from showing up at public locations to make arrests to wearing protective gear with the word “police” visible. It’s a never-ending attack on agencies carrying out orders from the president of the United States.

The defiance is no doubt largely politically motivated. There are also many financial benefits to protecting illegal immigrants, and the sanctuary cities across America seem to benefit from both. There wouldn’t be a need for rhetoric blaming federal agents of witch hunts if laws weren’t being broken. Oddly enough, the public school system seems to be the last place I would expect to become sanctuary spaces.

These institutions are meant to educate our children, and fighting against laws does the exact opposite of that. Resolutions such as this effectively teach school children that certain groups are above the law and shouldn’t have to follow the rules. That kind of environment is hardly conducive to a good educational experience.
