Just days before tariffs were scheduled to be slapped on Mexico’s exports to the United States, the two countries have reached a deal. Mexico has agreed to take measures to curb undocumented immigration to the United States. In exchange, the Trump administration has agreed to suspend tariffs indefinitely.
President Donald Trump blindsided observers around the world last week when he announced tariffs on Mexico. Many analysts feared that a trade war with Mexico could eventually send the global economy into a recession. Manufacturers in the United States warned that product costs would rise.
While the Republican Party has largely remained mum in regards to the ongoing trade war with China, many of Trump’s congressional allies were quick to denounce the tariffs on Mexico. Ultimately, however, the deal with Mexico could go down as one of Trump’s more successful ventures.
Apparently, officials from Mexico and the Trump administration were able to hammer out a deal in just three days. The two countries signed a joint declaration and Mexico has agreed to deploy its national guard on its southern border. A majority of illegal immigrants come from Central America rather than Mexico.
Mexico will now try to secure its border to prevent people from crossing into Mexico. The Mexican government has also agreed to take back those individuals who are caught trying to cross into the United States from Mexico. Individuals will wait in Mexico while their asylum case is considered in the United States. In exchange, the United States has pledged to expedite the asylum adjudication process.
Discussions will continue as the two countries work together to solve the migrant crisis. The United States also reiterated its pledge to assist with the development of Central America and southern Mexico. Many of those trying to flee to the United States are trying to escape poverty, crime, and violence.
