At the Senate Tuesday night, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) attempted to criticize Trump’s attorney general nominee Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) by reading a letter penned by the late widow of Martin Luther King Jr. — Coretta Scott King.
After numerous warnings, Fox Business notes that Warren’s fellow senators “essentially silenced” her, invoking a rule that prevents senators from impugning one another.
Since then, Warren’s attempt to read King’s letter — which spoke out against Sessions back in 1986 — has been hailed as a “triumphant moment” for Warren, who expressed outrage “that the words of Coretta Scott King are not suitable for debate in the United States Senate”
Now, a different member of the King family is speaking up, and making it clear that she feels very differently about Warren’s “moment.”
On Wednesday, Dr. Alveda King — the niece of MLK Jr. — argued that Warren is using her aunt’s letter, and the King family name, as nothing more than a tool to accomplish her own ends:
“It’s almost like a bait and switch.
Stir up their emotions, use the name of King — and my name is Alveda King — stir up people’s emotions, play the race card, which she was attempting to do.”
She didn’t leave it at that, but in fact went on to speak in support of Sessions — a man whom Democrats have outright labeled a “racist.”
