Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), darling of the left and boogie-woman of the right, isn’t as interested in the Mueller investigation as the rest of Washington, D.C. Speaking to the media in recent days, AOC argued that President Trump was claiming “no collusion, no collusion, no collusion.”
For AOC, however, it’s all about the “taxes, taxes, taxes.” The young congresswoman from New York City has called for the release of President Trump’s tax returns and financial statements. Oh, and she wants to see Trump’s “bank account, bank account, bank account,” as well. She believes that these documents could reveal Trump’s alleged wrongdoings.
During the 2016 Presidential campaign, President Trump broke with modern tradition and refused to release his tax returns, as all other presidential candidates in recent history have done. Trump claims it was because he was under audit. The IRS said that Trump was free to release his returns regardless, but he still refused to do so.
AOC and other Trump critics assert President Trump is hiding something and, they believe, that’s why he won’t release his returns. AOC believes that President Trump may have artificially inflated his assets to insurance companies, for example. Before Congress last week, former Trump attorney Michael Cohen claimed that Trump did indeed inflate assets.
AOC also claims that President Trump deflated his assets at times to avoid taxes. Again, this claim came forward at Michael Cohen’s testimony before Congress.
AOC has been making these claims as a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, which is charged with investigating alleged wrong-doing within the government. It’s rare for such a junior congresswoman to get such a high-profile committee post, but AOC has already emerged as one of the most high-profile members of Congress.
Trump likely won’t be releasing his tax returns in the near future. However, AOC and other Democrats may eventually get their hands on them anyway. Using Congressional authority, Democrats have unveiled a sweeping plan to investigate the president, his financial situation, and his relationship with Russia.
