Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is no fan of the president. In a sweeping interview, Rep. Pelosi lambasted President Trump but also noted that she’s not currently planning to impeach him. Why not? According to Pelosi, “he’s just not worth it.” Pelosi believes that impeaching the president would be too decisive. However, she did note that if anything “compelling” came to light, and if there was bipartisan support, impeachment might proceed.
When asked if President Trump had done anything good for the country, Pelosi poked fun at him, arguing that he’s been a “great organizer” for Democrats. During the 2018 midterms, the Democratic Party was able to reclaim the House as Democrats turned out in droves to support Democratic candidates.
And when Pelosi was asked if President Trump was fit for office, she claimed that he was ethically, politically, and intellectually unfit. She blasted Trump as xenophobic and argued that the president “is fighting clean air for your children to breathe, clean water for them to drink, food safety, every good thing that we should be doing that people can’t do for themselves.”
In spite of the harsh remarks, however, Pelosi argued that she has a respectful, honest relationship with President Trump. She also claims that she would never say anything behind his back that she wouldn’t say to his face.
So far, President Trump hasn’t responded to the interview on Twitter, which was published in the Washington Post magazine. Trump and Pelosi have a famously icy relationship, and the bruising battles in recent weeks over the border wall have raised tensions even further. Impeachment or not, Pelosi and Trump will likely remain at odds but Pelosi did say that she was “hopeful that at some point we can find common ground that he’ll stick to.”
