President Trump Playing Hardball with Democrats in the House

By: - March 6, 2019

President Trump has unveiled his preferred method for dealing with the investigations currently unfolding in the Democrat-controlled House. First, deny and dodge requests. Second, launch attacks on the Democrats and their attempts to investigate him and his finances.

If Democrats thought the president would roll over, or at least play nice, they were mistaken. Of course, President Trump’s approach might be exactly what Democrats expected. The House has the ability to investigate various things under various committees. Right now, it appears that a dozen different committees are launching investigations. In total, at least 30 investigations are being conducted.

The president has responded with harsh rhetoric. President Trump has labeled the investigations “a disgrace to our country.” Trump’s Twitter feed is now filled with allies defending him, and attacks on Democrats. It would seem that Trump is gearing up for what might be a bruising battle.

Various mainstream media websites are arguing that President Trump is in a “fight for survival.” The Mueller Report is expected to be released soon, state and federal prosecutors are starting to examine the president’s affairs, and then there is the House. Still, with Republicans in control of the Senate, Trump may be safe.

Democrats are asking for at least 80 documents and want to speak to many of Trump’s associates. The White House has been deflecting the requests while its legal team works to figure out how to stonewall the investigations. Using executive privilege has been considered. This would likely set up a legal battle. Any individuals who refuse to testify could be hauled before courts as well.

And, mind you, the confrontation between Trump and Democrats in the House has just kicked off.
