President Donald Trump stirred up a storm in an interview with ABC News on Wednesday. Trump claimed that he would accept damaging information from Russia and China come the 2020 Presidential race. While Trump has long denied coordinating any efforts with a foreign country, the stunning admission suggests he might be open to “collaboration” in the future.
President Trump also claimed that he would not necessarily share any information provided with the FBI. FBI Director Christopher Wray has apparently told Trump that should any foreign party approach him with information, he should immediately contact the FBI. Speaking on the issue, Trump said:
“The FBI director is wrong. It’s not an interference. They have information. I think I’d take it. If I thought there was something wrong, I’d go maybe to the FBI, if I thought there was something wrong.”
Brenda Lawrence, a Democratic representative from Michigan, claimed that the situation “is past sad. It is past frustration. This is criminal. It is criminal. And we need to hold this president accountable.”
Now, calls for impeachment are once again rising. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has so far been resisting calls to impeach President Trump. Many believe that Pelosi doesn’t want to risk riling up Trump’s base and that a failed impeachment would amount to a political victory for Trump. With Republicans firmly in control of the Senate, impeachment almost certainly wouldn’t make it any further than the House.
Additionally, some fear that the comments will tempt Russia, China, and other outside parties to interfere with the elections.
