Reddit is the 5th most popular website in the United States and is home to a huge number of communities. There’s a subreddit, or message board, for just about anything. And up until recently, Reddit was one of the most popular online gathering places for supporters of President Donald Trump.
That may no longer be the case, however. Reddit has quarantined the largest and most popular pro-Trump subreddit, /r/The_Donald. The subreddit has roughly 750,000 subscribers and describes itself as “a never-ending rally dedicated to the 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump.”
Reddit officials claim that users on /r/The_Donald had been inciting violence. In recent days, /r/The_Donald users were allegedly encouraging violence against politicians and police personnel in Oregon. Republican politicians in Oregon have supposedly fled the state in an effort to block a vote on climate change. The state police have since been tasked with rounding up these errant politicians.
For now, /r/The_Donald has not been banned. However, now that the site is quarantined, it will not show up in Search, and anyone who visits the page will be presented with a warning. Various other restrictions have been put in place and features have also been disabled.
Reddit claims that the subreddit was in violation of its site-wide policies. Conservative critics, however, claim that the quarantine is an example of liberal bias in social media. Some liberal critics, on the other hand, allege that /r/The_Donald has become a bastion of hate speech. While Reddit allows political speech, the site will not allow users to incite violence.
