What if Donald Trump, frustrated over congressional rejection of his border security policies, decided, instead of fighting it out for what’s right and what he was elected to do (not to mention what he promised to do), gave Nancy Pelosi almost equal standing with him to decide the issue?
Can you imagine the reaction from the GOP base? How many votes would he lose coming up to the 2020 election? Could the howls of glee from the Dems be any more deafening? How many members of his Cabinet might jump ship?
Well, switch the scenario to the UK and you have the current state of Prime Minister Theresa May and Brexit.
The primary reason there is not a Labour Prime Minister today is that before the last election the Labour party, initially as a literal stalking gambit/practical joke, voted in a Marxist as their party leader. No, I’m not engaging in fun hyperbole here. Jeremy Corbyn is a real live commie. The nation thought then, well, Theresa is about as exciting, charismatic, and inspiring as a wet horse blanket. But, even that is better than the Bolshie. So in the 2017 general election they gave her just the number of seats in parliament needed to form a government with the aid of the Ulster Unionists, the DUP.
She was elected in the negative sense mainly to do two things and two things only: shepherd the UK out of the EU and keep Corbyn out of power. The Tories who had a strong majority before she called that idiotic election three years too early (in their system you can call one between soon after and up to five years after the last go around), had made the previous mistake of naming anti-Brexit Theresa to the top slot to oversee a government dedicated to implementing Brexit. So one might easily say the current mess is really the ultimate fault of the Tories for putting Gilligan in charge of navigating the Titanic towards New York when he really wanted to go back to Southampton.
Her latest move is to negotiate with Corbyn to come to a Brexit deal that will pass the House of Commons after the numerous times any and all proposals for such were turned down. Members of her government have resigned over this and she is splitting the Tories into a strong Brexit faction and a loud minority pro-EU faction centered around members of parliament, not Tory voters.
Corbyn knows this and will extract more than a pound of political flesh. Namely, the mulligan vote he hopes will defeat Brexit and propel him into Number 10. May perhaps shares at least the first goal.
May has dropped any pretense of being a member of the Conservative Party or keeping her word to Britain. And her lame explanation that she is forsaking party for the good of the country ignores the fact that the country already voted for Brexit.
