The U.S. Navy is will commission its newest submarine, an attack vessel named after the Show-Me State at a ceremony in Groton, Connecticut. The fourth Navy ship to be dubbed Missouri, the 7800-ton Virginia-class sub was built for strike warfare — as well as for special operations, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, battle-group support and mine-warfare missions. The sub, almost 380 feet in length, will house a crew of about 135. It’s equipped with a reactor that will require no refueling during the planned life of the ship. The last USS Missouri was a battleship best remembered as the site where U.S. and allied officers accepted the unconditional surrender of Japan at the end of World War Two.
