President Donald Trump wants to raise at least $1 billion for his reelection campaign. Trump was able to defeat Hillary Clinton back in 2016 with a comparatively smaller campaign budget. Clinton raised $1.4 billion compared to Trump’s $957 million. However, 2020 could be much more competitive.
Clinton was a widely disliked candidate and couldn’t get enough voters to the polls. She was seen as an establishment politician as well, and people wanted change. Perhaps most damaging, many voters believed that the Democratic National Committee all but rigged the primary so she’d win.
Come 2020, and the Democrat who emerges from what could be the most crowded and competitive primary field in history will likely be quite popular. The eventual winner is going to need to have good ideas and a strong presence if he or she is going to secure the DNC nomination.
And given what we saw in 2018 Congressional races, it’s quite likely that Democratic voters will be both energized and willing to shell out time and money to support campaigns. Republicans suffered losses in the House, ceding even historically Red districts to Democratic upstarts.
Trump may face a similar challenge come 2020. And while Trump is already active on the campaign trail, regularly holding election-style rallies, he’s faced some setbacks in organizing and fundraising. For one, Trump hasn’t been able to find someone to take over at America First Action, a PAC that will be vital for Trump’s efforts to raise at least a billion dollars.
So far, no one seems to want the job. The Super PAC had a roster of potential leaders that ran over a dozen long. And still, a suitable candidate couldn’t found.
