Early results in Tuesday’s free-for-all California primary show Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton besting a gaggle of Democrats, and reality TV star Spencer Pratt forcing a run-off against incumbent Karen Bass for the office of Los Angeles mayor.

Fox News reported that with nearly 50% of the votes counted, Hilton had approximately 27% of the vote for governor, slightly ahead of former HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra with 26%. In third place was businessman Tom Steyer, with 20%. If Hilton and Becerra remain in the top two spots, they face each other in November’s genera election.

Bass had 36.5% to Pratt’s 30%, with City Councilwoman Nithya Raman garnering about 20%. If those numbers hold, Bass and Pratt will face-off head-to-head in the November contest.

Hilton told Fox News as returns were coming in: “The mood here is calm confidence,” but the Republican said he wouldn’t celebrate till returns were official.
