A jury in Rochester, Minnesota, has convicted a woman of disorderly conduct for a racial epithet she used against a man who confronted her.
The two conflicted in a public park because the woman caught a little boy taking items out of a diaper bag she had for her child.
Online reporting confirmed the fight was over use of the N-word, which was used both by the woman and the man who was recording the confrontation. He apparently objected to her verbal characterization of the boy who took the item with the N-word.
“The case stems from an April 2025 playground incident in which she used the N-word toward an 8-year-old black autistic boy after he took an applesauce pouch from her diaper bag, an act she described as defending her child’s property. … After roughly nine hours of deliberation, the jury found {Shiloh} Hendrix guilty on one count of disorderly conduct related to the viral aftermath video and not guilty on the second,” reports confirmed.
She was acquitted of a second count relating to her use of the N-word to the boy.
Her punishment, which is heading toward appeal, was one year of probation, a $1,000 fine, 200 hours of community service, and a stayed 90-day jail term.
“Rochester NAACP chapter president Wale Elegbede called the outcome a ‘mixed result,’ stating, ‘There isn’t a path to restorative justice where there’s no remorse,’” the report said.
Meanwhile, defense lawyer Brian Karalus said the result was a “fraud” obtained in a “circus.”
“Many observers have raised concerns that the conviction represents an assault on free speech, arguing the words, while offensive, do not meet the legal threshold for unprotected ‘fighting words.’ A growing number of people are asking why this case was ever brought to court at all, and whether selective enforcement risks undermining the First Amendment,” a report noted.

The New York Post said the 37-year-old mom was blasted for her words toward the man who recorded the incident, and also used the N-word.
She raised almost $900,000 through an online fundraiser titled “Help Me Protect My Family,” the report said.
“I called the kid out for what he was,” the page still reads.
Olmsted County District Judge Christa M. Daily heard the case, and kept the jury on duty late into the evening for the decision.
The man taking the video is Sharmake Omar.
Karalas said, of the case, “We’re dealing with a judge who’s very temperamental and emotional and, without question…she is 100% pro-state. She doesn’t even try to hide it.”
In his arguments, the prosecutor, Nicholas Shabel, claimed Hendrix was ready to physically attack the boy.
Karalas charged, “We can say a word is ugly and still defend another person’s right to say it. The state of Minnesota has decided to prosecute Ms. Hendrix for language.”
