Catholic nuns in the state of New York have gained an initial victory in their fight with officials over their demands the nuns participate in a newly enacted assisted suicide scheme.
“State officials will not be allowed to enforce” the provisions of the state’s “Medical Aid in Dying Act” against four orders of Catholic sisters and the healthcare ministries that sued Attorney General Letitia James, according to a a report at RedState.
“U.S. District Judge Anne M. Nardacci signed a consent order July 30 after the plaintiffs and state officials voluntarily agreed to a temporary restraining order. The protection remains in place until Nardacci denies the plaintiffs’ emergency motion, grants the state’s anticipated motion to dismiss, or issues another order lifting it,” the report said.
The scheme allows terminally ill adults in New York with six months or less to live to get medication the patient may self-administer to die.
Gov. Kathy Hochul, supporting the death-on-demand agenda, signed the law.
The specifics are that two doctors must confirm the diagnosis and prognosis, patients must be evaluated mentally, then make oral and written requests to die,
However, RedState pointed out, “The Catholic plaintiffs do not prescribe, counsel about, refer for, or, God-willing, ever allow assisted suicide at their facilities.”
Their legal fight began a few weeks ago because the new law, along with the state’s Palliative Care Information Act, would force them into help with deaths – against their religious beliefs.
Those fighting the state’s death agenda included the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm, the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne, the Missionary Sisters of St. Benedict, and the Little Sisters of the Poor. The Diocese of Rockville Centre, Catholic Health, and several Catholic nursing and assisted-living facilities joined them, the report said.
They objected to state orders that they abandon their religious beliefs or face huge fines and penalties.
It’s just the latest fight provoked by leftists in government operations trying to force people of faith to violate their consciences and beliefs.
The Obama administration demanded the same leftist bent with its mandatory abortion promotions by all, and the state of Colorado has turned the agenda into an art form, demanding that a bakery artist promote the LGBT ideology with his speech, a web designer to the same, and even counselors adopt the leftist beliefs.
The state, of course, lost all three fights at the Supreme Court, costing its taxpayers millions of dollars for its failed leftist agenda talking points.
In New York, the order is temporary while the case continues, but it bars James, state Health Commissioner James McDonald, and state medical board officials from requiring the plaintiffs or those working for them to: “provide information and counseling about the use of medication for medical aid in dying.”
The state also is banned from demanding the ministries set up assisted-killing policies and such.
The fight will continue in court over the state’s agenda that involves facilitating people to kill themselves.
