2 January: This Day in Military History

By: - January 2, 2019

Today’s post is in honor of Sgt. Shawn F. Hill, who on this date in 2008, was killed by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan’s Khowst province. The 37-year-old native of Wellford, S.C. was assigned to the South Carolina National Guard’s 178th Engineer Battalion, 218th Infantry Brigade.

1863: Union Maj. Gen. William S. Rosecrans’ Army of the Cumberland narrowly defeats Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg’s Army of Tennessee in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Losses were heavy: roughly one-third of the 42,000 Union and 35,000 Confederate soldiers are killed, wounded, or missing. In fact, casualty percentages were higher during the Battle of Stones River than during any other engagement during the Civil War.

1942: In the Philippines, Manila falls to Japanese Lt. Gen. Masaharu Homma’s 14th Army, as well as the naval base at Cavite and Clark Field.

1951: When enemy machine gun fire from an adjacent hill tears into Sgt. 1st Class Junior D. Edwards and his platoon near Changbong-ni (South Korea), Edwards rushes the nest. He temporarily drives off the enemy gun crew until he runs out of ammunition and has to cross the kill-zone a second time for additional grenades. Upon returning, he kills the remaining communists, but another machine gun opens fire on his position. Racing through enemy fire again for more grenades, he manages to neutralize the second position. Edwards falls while making yet another assault against the enemy, and will posthumously be awarded the Medal of Honor.

1967: (Featured Image) In just one day, Col. Robin Olds’ 8th Tactical Fighter Wing – the “Wolfpack” – wipes out half of North Vietnam’s MiG 21 fighter fleet in Operation BOLO. Olds’ advanced F-4C Phantoms tricked communist intelligence into thinking the advanced fighters were just another easy target of F-105 Thunderchief fighter-bombers by flying at altitudes, speeds, routes, and using radio callsigns typical to the less maneuverable F-105s. When the MiGs flew into Olds’ ambush, seven “Fishbeds” are shot down in 12 minutes. Col. Olds scores one of the victories, making him the only Air Force ace with kills in both World War II and Vietnam.

1994: In the skies over southern Iraq, the highly advanced F-4G “Wild Weasel V” flies its last combat mission. During Operation DESERT STORM, the Wild Weasel crews took on the dangerous role of targeting Iraqi air defense networks, destroying some 200 sites.

    • K.C. athlete kicks on the leftist outrage machine
On May 11, Kansas City Chiefs placekicker Harrison Butker gave the commencement address at Benedictine College, a Catholic school in Kansas. Within 48 hours, the media elites were ablaze with outrage. There's a "growing uproar," warned NBC's Hoda Kotb. A Catholic speaker talked about Catholic issues to Catholic graduates. But the Butker critics who aren't… […]
    • Another big lie: Liberals are more 'caring' than conservatives
People often ask, "How do you handle mean, vicious people when out in public?" The truth is I rarely encounter nastiness. It does happen, but thankfully, it is pretty rare. In general, when people don't like me, they possess the maturity to restrain themselves from verbal road rage. I conduct myself the same way when… […]
    • The Biden campaign: Dead in the water
On Nov. 5, 2023, the New York Times published a story headlined, "Trump Leads in 5 Critical States as Voters Blast Biden, Times/Siena Poll Finds." Focusing on the states most likely to decide the 2024 election, the Times reported, "The results show Mr. Biden is losing to Mr. Trump, his likeliest Republican rival, by margins… […]

    • From the Pit to Power: An election drama in 2 acts
Joe Biden's claim, speaking recently to Democrat donors, that Donald Trump intends to be a democracy-demolishing dictator, if elected, is shameless. "He's saying it out loud," Biden seethed. No, Joe, he didn't. The accusation stems from Trump's playful response to a Sean Hannity question during a December town hall meeting in Iowa. To anyone watching… […]
    • Too many laws, too little freedom
We are caught in a vicious cycle of too many laws, too many cops, and too little freedom. It's hard to say whether we're dealing with a kleptocracy (a government ruled by thieves), a kakistocracy (a government run by unprincipled career politicians, corporations and thieves that panders to the worst vices in our nature and… […]
    • 50 NFL players are arrested annually – but the pro-family one gets attacked
(THE BLAZE) -- Around 50 NFL players are arrested on average every year. Since 2000, the Kansas City Chiefs have supplied 41 of those arrests, tied for fourth in the league. NFL player arrests include 129 cases of domestic violence, 120 assault or battery cases, and even a handful of murder and homicide cases. The… […]
    • When living in mom's basement is a GOOD idea
Dear Dave, I'm in college full-time right now, and my parents have been generous enough to pay for some of my school expenses. In addition, they let me live at home while I complete my degree. I work some nights and most weekends so I can go to school debt-free, but I'm trying to figure… […]
