Prime Minister Theresa May Resigns Over Brexit Failure

By: - May 24, 2019

Prime Minister Theresa May tearfully conceded defeat, acknowledging that she was unable to deliver Brexit to the British people. While Brits had narrowly voted in favor of Brexit back in 2016, the UK government has not been able to agree to terms for actually leaving the European Union.

May’s resignation proves just how much of a quagmire Brexit has become. Some want a hard break with the EU. Others want a softer break and access to the European Union’s vast and immensely valuable markets. And many more still want to remain in the European Union.

May has been trying to bridge the differences between the sparring parties but so far has been unable to do so. And now, she’s throwing in the towel. She had tried three different times to pass a Brexit plan but has fallen short with each effort. May’s last day in office will be June 7th. Who will take over for her? Nobody seems to know. And how will Brexit proceed? Again, no one seems to know.

The only thing the United Kingdom parliament appears to agree on is “no.” “No” to a soft Brexit, “no” to remaining in the European Union, “no” to a hard break with no deal. However, the UK can’t say no forever. While the European Union granted a short extension to forcing the UK out of the Union, that will run out on October 31st, 2019.

If the UK parliament can’t come to a satisfactory agreement between itself and the EU, then the United Kingdom could be forcefully booted from the European Union. Given May’s own failures, it’s quite possible that Parliament will be unable to reach an agreement in the weeks ahead.
