Once Again, Trump’s Brinkmanship is Successful

By: - June 8, 2019

No matter how they try to spin it, President Trump pulled off a big win in the battle of immigration. After asking, begging, and demanding Congress do their job, he took measures into his own hands and did what he does best: Overcome impediments and get things accomplished for the American people, as he promised.

Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Mexico if they did not step up to the plate and do their part to stem the northward flow of illegal immigration into the United States. He set a very hard line and forced Mexico to the table.  After the videos exposing over a thousand illegal immigrants rushing through the border at one point recently, it is no longer possible for the Mexican government to hold that they can do nothing about it.

Thousands of illegal immigrants pass through Mexico on their trip to the U.S. The southern Mexican border is a gateway that the Mexican government could plug but up to now has chosen to simply allow passage through their country. The constant convoys of migrants seem to have finally caused the Mexican government to take notice. That is after several of their own city mayors and officials complained that they could no longer support the flow.

Ever since President Trump came to office, immigration has been central to his administration. The other thing that has been his administration’s focal point is the complete resistance by the Democratic Party and its unrelenting attempts to thwart his policies at every opportunity. For months the Democrats said there was no crisis at the border. They advanced the notion that the emergency was a fiction conjured by Trump. Well, even they can’t continue to pull that story over the public’s eyes anymore.

The border patrol has repeatedly said they are overrun. Even former Obama officials say there is clearly a crisis, but the Dems continued to close their eyes and play partisan politics.

Enter the president that the nation elected. He was elected because he was seen as one to get things done; again, he has come through.

Brinkmanship? Yes, he is a master of it. He pushed NATO and threatened withdrawal, and what happened? NATO is now paying the agreed portion of their own defense, exactly what President Trump lacking and remedied by requesting fair shares be put forth. He pushed on China and is holding firm on sanctions. What happened? China has returned to the table. Even North Korea negotiations, where the rhetoric and talk was sometimes over the top, resulted in a cessation of nuclear tests and a willingness to once again return to talks. And now, even though there were naysayers from his own party, the Trump method of negotiation, one that is done from a strict position of strength, has resulted in Mexico working to stem the immigration problem on their side.

Is this all about the art of the deal? Just look at the results on so many fronts and try to determine why there is such a difference. The clear difference is President Trump. In a few years, it may well be referred to as the Trump Doctrine.  Something that worked when years of appeasement, apologies, and putting global interest in front of the U.S. was the norm. Under the Trump Doctrine, the United States prevails as primary, and that policy has resulted in economic advances, low unemployment, businesses returning to the America, and a much stronger nation. Really, all that needs to happen is for the Democrats, those that can’t get beyond losing the last election, to simply get out of the way and let the president do his job: Make America Great Again.
