Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Says Impeachment is on ‘Our Doorstep’

By: - April 19, 2019

President Donald Trump claims that the Mueller report offers a “total exoneration” regarding allegations of collusion with Russia and obstruction. His critics, on the other hand, charge that the Mueller report uncovered enough disturbing behavior to impeach the president. And star Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) is claiming that impeachment is at “our doorstep.”

Previously, AOC had downplayed the prospect of impeachment and has generally brushed the aspect aside, preferring to focus on other issues. While AOC remains focused elsewhere, she’s apparently warming to the idea of impeachment. On Twitter, AOC wrote:

While AOC has pledged to support efforts to impeach the president, many other Democrats have expressed reservations. The second-ranking House Democrat, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, has said that pursuing impeachment wouldn’t be worthwhile. Hoyer believes that with the Presidential election approaching in just 18 months, it’s best to let the American people decide.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had expressed her own reservations before the Mueller report was released, arguing that impeachment would be too divisive. So far, there are no indications that the Mueller report’s release has caused a change of heart.

The Mueller report has been causing quite the stir. Among other revelations, the report revealed that President Trump had tried to fire Mueller for “conflicts of interest” but former White House lawyer Don McGahn refused to follow orders. The report also claims that the Trump campaign knew that Russian interference would benefit them but didn’t take criminal steps to support Russia.
