Although President Obama vowed to close Guantanamo Bay, the prison remains open and the United States continues to spend approximately $91 million a year on the facility, and subsequent military trials.
While the base only has 61 remaining inmates, it continues to serve as a strong bargaining chip for military and intelligence officials and keeps enemy combatants off the battlefield. Despite claims by many that released detainees did not return to fighting after their release, the defense and intelligence communities have seen a staggering number of extremists return to the battlefield with even more credibility following their stay at Guantanamo.
With the end of Obama’s term rapidly approaching, and a Republican held congress, it now seems increasingly likely that Guantanamo Bay will remain open for business.
