An off-duty officer with the Chicago Police Department died Tuesday afternoon after he was fatally shot in a downtown building, Fox News has learned.
Commander Paul Bauer was chasing a suspect in what witnesses believed was a robbery when he was “shot multiple times,” Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said at a news conference.

“CPD officer assisting a tactical team and was shot by assailant,” the department tweeted, adding that the unidentified officer was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Multiple sources told Fox News the officer has died.
The officer, identified as a district commander, was shot in the stairwell of the Thompson Center in the city’s downtown business center, Fox 32 Chicago reported.
