There seems to be one demographic that always pops up in politics and social media arguments; the US Armed Forces. Most recently, there has been a very heated and public exchange between President Donald Trump and a Florida congresswoman.
It began when President Trump issued remarks about past presidents and their interactions with gold star families — specifically phone calls to family members of fallen service members. Following the statement, Representative Frederica Wilson felt the need to chime in about the phone call between President Trump and the family of Sergeant La David Johnson, who was killed in Niger. According to Wilson, the president made insensitive remarks to the effect of, “He knew what he was signing up for, but it still hurts.” President Trump has denied the accusations.
This back and forth between politicians is the last thing the country needs during a time of mourning. The devastating loss of four service members is now overshadowed by petty arguments.
This congresswoman stooped to some serious lows by publicly disclosing a condolence call between the president and grieving widow. While the family of Sgt. Johnson has since spoken publicly regarding the phone call, Wilson led the charge. Rather than taking the high road — something Democrats preach about a lot — the congresswoman successfully began a campaign to drag the President of the United States through the mud.
This back and forth between politicians is the last thing the country needs during a time of mourning. The devastating loss of four service members is now overshadowed by petty arguments. Rather than remembering Sgt. La David Johnson and honoring his name, his name is now at the center of political agenda.
The White House spoke via Chief of Staff General John Kelly, who backed President Trump’s account of the phone call and blasted the congresswoman’s selfish act. Gen. Kelly shared his own personal experience with losing his son in combat and how President Trump looked to him for advice on consoling family members. Kelly shared a very personal memory of how his best friend comforted him immediately following the death of his son. President Trump took the same sentiment given to Gen. Kelly and tried to express it to the family members of the four fallen heroes who lost their lives in Niger.
I have often heard the same sentiments myself from others when expressing appreciation for fallen service members. “They knew the risks and chose to serve honorably, putting themselves in harm’s way.” It’s not a new sentiment. It’s not even an offensive sentiment. Not unless you’re Frederica Wilson.
She responded to Gen. Kelly’s moving speech by laughing and boasting how the White House is now paying attention to her. She even called herself a “rockstar.” This woman has absolutely no shame. I don’t condone President Trump for using fallen soldiers as a talking point in the political arena, but to attack him for attempting to express sentiments explained to him by a gold star father is truly deplorable. Rep. Frederica Wilson should have issued an apology directly to Gen. Kelly for speaking before she was informed upon learning he advised the president. She also needs to issue an apology to the rest of the United States for her tacky hats.
