Cosmo polarizes readership with divisive article on gender reveal parties…
I’ve noticed that lately Cosmopolitan magazine has taken a huge turn for the worse. As a former reader, I can recall articles that actually empowered women from college advice to features on women with successful careers. I don’t recall too many spreads on parenting, politics, or protesting. I haven’t been an avid reader of the magazine in several years. With just about everyone having some type of social media platform these days, I occasionally come across a shared article or post from the magazine that makes me wonder where Cosmo finds their writers.
In one of their latest articles, Cosmo blasts the increasingly popular gender reveal party. Thrown by expecting parents, gender reveals offer an exciting way to share the gender of an unborn baby with friends and family. While I have never attended one of these parties, I have never been offended by their existence. Leave that to Cosmo. They advise parents-to-be to stop celebrating their baby’s gender.
According to the article, it is simply the “anatomy” that is being celebrated and gender shouldn’t be tied into the theme. Oddly enough, the writer describes herself as a feminist while she bashes women who choose to partake in celebrating not only pregnancy, but the gender of their babies. The author makes the argument that gender reveal parties not only project the idea that women are only good for making babies, but also that they are damaging to children.
Part of the huge problem with so-called feminists is their constant need to find issue with what other women are doing. To me, feminism is defined by women feeling empowered. If women feel empowered by becoming mothers and choosing to make parenting their life’s work, that is their choice and right. Biologically speaking, women are the only ones who can give birth to children. That hasn’t changed—no matter how politically correct snarky self-described feminists want the world to be.
American society is well aware that women are valuable and bring plenty to the table. One factor that this “feminist” seems to be overlooking is the fact that not every woman is able to have children of her own. Others have long journeys with infertility that before they are able to become parents, if ever. The author also links gender reveal parties to damaging effects and confusion that may occur in individuals who will grow up to identify as something other than the sex assigned at birth.
The gender argument has gotten so out of control, that people are reaching for things to be offended by. Society has accepted all of the different flavors of the rainbow. No amount of protesting, kicking, screaming, and arguing will convince every single American that there is only one way to regard politically charged beliefs such as gender identity. That’s the beauty of living in a country where citizens are free to think how they choose – to include weird Cosmo writers who write laughable garbage that reads like satire.
