Botham Shem Jean was fatally shot in his own apartment by Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger. Guyger walked into Jean’s apartment thinking it was her own. It is unknown what the exchange was before Guyger shot Jean who later died at the hospital.
It is unknown if the two knew each other or had any sort of history together. There is no current motive for what happened but it is currently being investigated.
The Texas Rangers, the state law enforcement agency, has taken over investigation of the incident to reduce any potential bias. Investigators haven taken a blood sample of Guyger to test for any drugs or alcohol in her system.
