I meant the first part of that headline as a metaphor. But have you seen Florida Democrat Rep. Frederica Wilson? She seems to forget that the proper execution of the Dorian Gray trick is to have the true image in the attic.
Not only that, but she is crazy as a bedbug. She makes Maxine Waters look like Aristotle, Nancy Pelosi like Milton Friedman in drag. The chick has more than a passing fondness for cocoa puffs.
But her latest offense to reason is interesting because she drops the mask and let’s us see, if only for a short time, what Dems like her really think about democracy and the U.S. Constitution.
She said Tuesday that people who “make fun of members of Congress online” should feel the lash of the law: “We’re gonna shut them down and work with whoever it is to shut them down, and they should be prosecuted.” Oh yeah, sweetheart? After you read up on New York Times v. Sullivan, bring it on.
Magna Carta, the Enlightenment, the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, all fall away under the enlightened opinions of this Dem leader. To her any voice of satire, parody, or opposition should be quashed immediately. Freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom in general be damned as long as upstart tyrants like Frederica Wilson are immune from criticism.
Wilson showcases what the Dems have become: an anti-democratic authoritarian party whose only goal is raw power. Too much? Oh yeah?
Think what would have happened if a member of the GOP advocated throwing the entire staff of The New York Times in jail because one of them mocked Mitch McConnell. Can you imagine the legitimate outcry? However, Frederica is hearing not a word in opposition from her fellow Dems. Why?
Because they agree with her but aren’t as dumb as she is (we’re talking bag of hammers dumb) to come out and say it.
This kind of scant adherence to liberty and freedom of conscience is what we are in store for if they get their classic red mitts on the Senate, White House, or a majority on the high court.
It is a fate we would do well to ponder.
