The European Union is considering additional sanctions against Russia due to their activity in Syria, which is tied to their continued support to the Assad regime. The EU initially placed sanctions on Russia in March 2014 because of their aggression in Crimea. Those sanctions have remained in place ever since. However, prior to the events in Syria, several EU members had resumed discussions with Russia and consistently argued to the organization that the previous sanctions should be lifted. Such progress now seems unlikely, as the status quo, at minimum, is expected, if not an increase in Russian sanctions.
