“It’s insane to think that Cam Newton holds any credibility where women’s rights are concerned. He’s not going to stop me from performing my job or partaking in events I might be interested in.”
It was only a matter of time before so-called feminists found something to be outraged about in the midst of all the turmoil currently affecting the United States. The social media outrage of the day is centered on comments made by Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. When asked by a female reporter about some specifics of the game that I don’t understand, Newton laughed and said it’s funny to hear a female talk about the game of football in depth like that.
Speaking as a female who knows absolutely nothing about football, I watched the video several times, and while his comments were probably in bad taste, I don’t think Cam Newton set women back. Many men have the belief that women don’t know much about sports — especially football — because many women don’t. In the past, I’ve jokingly made comments to that affect myself. Luckily, I’m not in the public eye to be criticized.
Tacky as his comment was, there’s no need to call Linda Sarsour and her pink hats just yet
It should be noted that Cam Newton has indeed participated in the NFL kneeling for the National Anthem protests. He seems to be pretty woke in that sense. However, there aren’t as many women in sports casting and journalism as there are men. This piece of information is actually factual. While I think the advancement of women into sports is great, I’m also not triggered by comments made by Cam Newton (of all people). This is a person who will kneel for the National Anthem as a middle finger to President Trump. He has also held up a fist following a touchdown in order to make a political statement.
Cam Newton has shown that he doesn’t much care what people have to say about him. To call him sexist might have some merit, but the context of his comments to the reporter seemed more like he was expressing how impressed he was with a female having the ability to talk football. The extent of my football knowledge begins and ends with identifying what a touchdown is. Most of my female friends don’t know anything about football either. Of course a grown man is going to be taken aback by a female who is well-versed in the game.
American culture has embraced mobs with pitchforks taking to social media to drag someone through the mud for their opinions, thoughts, ideas, and expression. It’s insane to think that Cam Newton holds any credibility where women’s rights are concerned. He’s not going to stop me from performing my job or partaking in events I might be interested in. The opinion of one man shouldn’t cause this much turmoil with women or call their identity into question.
Cam Newton doesn’t speak for the NFL or even the Carolina Panthers. Do we really need to continue putting so much stock in what these players say? The female reporter got her question answered, so it’s not like the man said, “Get your lipstick and high heels out of here, I have no comment.” Tacky as his comment was, there’s no need to call Linda Sarsour and her pink hats just yet.
