“I grew up listening to country music. I continue enjoying the genre of music of my childhood. I don’t fit into the stereotypical demographic that Geftman-Gold referred to. I am not a white Republican.”
Hayley Geftman-Gold found her way back into headlines even after she was unceremoniously fired from CBS for her despicable social media comments. In the wake of the mass shooting in Las Vegas, Geftman-Gold took to Facebook to express her political views regarding the situation: “If they wouldn’t do anything when children were murdered I have no hope that the Repugs will ever do the right thing. I’m actually not even sympathetic bc country music fans often are republican gun toters.”
She faced serious backlash for her comments and was immediately fired from CBS for violating company standards. Naturally, after serious backlash, she issued an apology for her disgusting remarks, saying, “I am deeply sorry for diminishing the significance of every life affected by Stephen Paddock’s terrorism last night and for the pain my words have inflicted on the loved ones of the victims.”
Shortly after Geftman-Gold’s comments went viral, she began getting feedback from random people. Of course, when a social media user makes such polarizing public comments, it’s to be expected that even crazy individuals are going to come out of the woodwork. That’s exactly what happened, according to Geftman-Gold. She has supposedly received numerous death threats, which prompted her to seek police protection.
If this woman can’t find sympathy for fellow Americans being gunned down, I hope she isn’t surprised when others don’t find sympathy for her
I could say I have no sympathy for someone receiving death threats based upon their political views, but that would put me in the same bottom-dwelling category as Hayley Geftman-Gold. No one deserves violence. It’s ironic that the woman who so callously blamed the victims of the Las Vegas shooting has now become bothered by threats to her own life based upon her expressed opinions. She doesn’t deserve it—not even for organizing events in support of Hillary Clinton.
We’ve become so accustomed to people showing a complete lack of empathy during situations that should bring Americans together. It’s also completely offensive and stereotypical to assume that all country music fans are Republicans. I grew up listening to country music. I continue enjoying the genre of music of my childhood. I don’t fit into the stereotypical demographic that Geftman-Gold referred to. I am not a white Republican. I happen to know for a fact that others like me were present at the shooting in Vegas.
Luckily for Hayley Geftman-Gold, law enforcement officials are there to protect her from violence—toting their guns
While she can backpedal as much as she wants, these hateful remarks have reverberated and sparked conversations. Did the non-white Democrats in the audience deserve to be shot at? If this woman can’t find sympathy for fellow Americans being gunned down, I hope she isn’t surprised when others don’t find sympathy for her.
I believe it’s important to address gun control issues in the wake of incidents such as Vegas. However, I don’t find it appropriate to point fingers or victim blame. I’m pretty shocked that Geftman-Gold was employed as a lawyer when she makes such irrational and poorly constructed statements. Luckily for Hayley Geftman-Gold, law enforcement officials are there to protect her from violence—toting their guns.
