Retired U.S. Marine Corps General James “Mad Dog’ Mattis is a legend and beloved leader within the military community. As his name surfaces as a possible candidate for Secretary of Defense, to the delight of many across the country, some of his detractors will likely cite 10 U.S. Code ~113-Secretary of Defense, which states that one must have at least seven years of separation from his/her last command prior to serving as our nation’s Secretary of Defense. General Mattis retired just three years ago, however, a similar incident occurred with General George Marshall in 1950 after being nominated by President Harry Truman. Marshall was given a waiver by Congress and allowed to serve as SECDEF. Will a similar process occur for Mattis?
