Amazing news is breaking that has been met with almost deafening silence from the mainstream media. Migrants from North Africa, the new gateway to European countries like Italy and Malta, were rescued by a commercial shipping tanker, and then took over the ship when they realized they were being taken back to North Africa.
This is literally a definition of piracy. The armed forces of Malta had to board the boat and retake the ship. They found that the captain was under duress and forced to change course. The Italian interior minister rightly called this an act of piracy, but humanitarian groups retorted that this was simply a result of “Europe’s inhumane border policy.”
Sadly, this is another attempt of leftist human rights groups undermining the law and beginning in the middle of the story, all to stoke more outrage that will further undermine the rule of law. European countries have a right to enforce their borders and have an orderly entry process. This makes sure that they are not importing terrorists, criminals, drug smugglers or human traffickers—and now pirates! It also makes sure they can test for contagious diseases before admitting them, and that they are only admitting as many as their country thinks is logistically acceptable and helpful for the country.
But, in the name of love, human rights groups are condoning piracy, discounting a nation’s right to enforce immigration policy, and ignoring the many immigrants that choose to put their children (47 in this band of pirates) into dangerous ocean or desert crossing. They are subjected to criminals or resort to piracy instead of looking for safer options closer to home.
