Like a political atomic ray-blazing garrulous and debonair Godzilla, Nigel Farage yesterday stomped into putty the weak, trembling metaphorical Tokyos of the major parliamentary parties in his crushing Brexit Party victory over them in the EU election in the UK.
The ironic hilarity?
If the Tories had kept their word to the British people on Brexit this election never would have taken place and the Tories would have not just been handed their worst result ever, taking 4th or 5th place in most constituencies. Whoever takes over the Tory/Conservative Party and national government from Theresa May, given her gift of this steaming pile of electoral excrement, will have nowhere to go but up.
With most areas reporting in, the Brexit Party has gained over 30 percent of the vote with 28 out of 73 seats taken. Farage and his buccaneers have won every single area in Britain except London. For Americans it would be like Trump winning every single state except New York. Three years ago a solid Brexit victory was a foreshadowing of Trump’s victory here. This resounding drubbing of the Labour/Dem party may be the same harbinger for 2020.
In many areas the Brexit Party (BXP) more than doubled the vote of the next closest contender. The Lib Dems, with 15 seats won as an anti-Brexit party, came in second but nowhere close to Farage and his merry band. Bringing up the sad rear are the Greens (8 seats), Labour (10 seats), and the Tories (3 seats). UKIP, once the party of Farage and the standard bearer for Brexit, lost all their seats. They would be smart to fold into the BXP.
The leftist British media like the BBC is, of course, ignoring the major BXP win and trying to run interference and rationalizations for the Lib Dems and against Brexit. Not many are buying it, as BXP almost doubled the Lib Dem numbers. It is reminiscent of the old dark joke, “Aside from that, Mrs. Kennedy, how was Dallas?”
Now remember, this was not an election to sit in the British parliament. One of those doesn’t have to happen for three more years under the five-year rule since the last election. The Tories still control the parliament by a small margin with the support of the Ulster loyalist DUP. This election was for British seats in the EU parliament, a grouping that the BXP wants to pull out of. So they’ve won with a goal of eliminating their own seats.
Confused yet?
No problem. That’s what anglophiles like me are here for.
All of the EU has had this election and current results look good for Trump-like populist parties across the national spectrum. Farage himself is now looking to fight the next British parliamentary race, one he thinks might happen because of the political instability of the governing Tories.
But he has an ace up his sleeve.
The new leader of the Tories will likely be as pro-Brexit as Farage. Thus Nigel, a former Tory, can cut a deal. He can bring his Brexiteers over to the Tories if the Tories make firm assurances they will actually follow through no matter what, with exiting the EU at the five-month deadline from now. Most serious contenders for the Tory PM race have already made that pledge. If it comes to pass, then Brexit will have been achieved and there is no more reason for the BXP to exist. Nigel can then work his way back home to the Conservatives as a major player, and possible future PM himself, in the national government that now has the added strength of the generally conservative former members of the BXP. Everyone that should, especially the UK, wins.
And all this is very good news for the U.S., as Nigel and prospective Tory PM Boris Johnson are solid friends and supporters of President Trump.
So let us bask today in the warm glow of giving the British and European left a right good pranging at the polls. While we may not relax for long but must return to the barricades, it is a good day to be a free individual in the West.
Let us hope that day has countless hours left.
