The current state of the British political scene makes Trump’s Washington look like the Idaho State House on an out-of-session Sunday. Both British parties are split by Brexit. Posh statist types are against it, and for another vote, while the middle and working classes are for it. The party who had the most to lose on the issue, Labour, now did just that, by their own hand. As Britain is our closest ally, this matter has ramifications for U.S. national security.
British Labour Party Leader, anti-Semite and barking mad lunatic Jeremy Corbyn on Monday decided his party will support a second vote on Brexit. This reverses his stated policy since the 2016 British 52 percent to 48 percent vote to leave the European Union. He does this knowing full well that many Labour voters, wanting no part of an EU that caters almost exclusively to the upper class, voted firmly for Brexit. The Conservatives, also knowing that a solid majority of their party wants out of vassalage to Brussels, have their pro-EU brigade too.
Will the UK split into pro- and anti-Brexit political parties, crossing traditional party lines? Will the more than several Labourites and Tories who last week quit their party gain strength or return to their former political homes? Is a “no deal” Brexit, leaving the EU without a divorce settlement, still a Brexit?
These questions will be answered in the coming year and maybe longer. But it can be said that this fight has caused not just an EU break, but also a realignment in generations-long voter loyalties. It also brings up the further question: Will the pro-EU types just keep demanding further votes, as they have in other countries, until they get the decision they want?
Can a nation that allows this be justifiably called a constitutional monarchy, much less a practical parliamentary democracy?
To allow a hilariously-named “People’s Vote” (I guess the people who voted the first time aren’t people at all. Perhaps an unknown species of crustacean.) is to sell out the millions of voters who voted to leave. However, the state of fubar isn’t confined to Labour. Putting anti-Brexit politician Theresa May at the top of a Tory government officially committed to it was a travesty waiting to happen.
Since then, May has hardly missed an opportunity to shoot herself in the kitten heels. She makes the end of the Eden premiership look stable and comforting. At least the Tories are still publicly for leaving the EU, their Party chairman Brandon Lewis commenting, Corbyn wants “to betray the will of the British people and ignore the biggest democratic vote in our nation’s history.”
Labour claims it is only saving the UK from the prospect of “a damaging Tory Brexit being forced on the country.” But it’s not a Tory Brexit Labour now in truth opposes, it is Brexit itself.
Not too long ago, Britain decided otherwise. Smart money is she would again.
