The highly favorable 50 percent approval rating the president recently received from Latin voters, according to a Marist Poll ironically for PBS and NPR, is being rationalized and ignored by the media as a statistical anomaly. That is in public. In private I bet they are not amused. Well, one look at the crowd of Latins at Trump’s recent speech in Miami must give the Dems and their lapdog media even more cause for headaches.
In 2020 Latins will be the largest ethnic minority in the electorate. About 32 million are registered to vote. That’s about 2 million more than black voters. But of course, registration is relatively meaningless, as who actually votes, not if they can vote, decides elections. That 32 million translates into about 11 percent of the people who vote, as it did the last two federal election years.
The good news for the president, if the number holds to November 2020, puts purple states like Colorado and Nevada back in play for him and takes other battleground states the Dems need (like Florida and Arizona) off the map for the budding socialists. This number would lose the Dems about a dozen in the House and make the Senate off limits for a Dem victory dance. That rhumba, or cumbia where my folks are from, will instead beat for the Trump and the GOP.
What are the Dems doing about this potential disaster for them, as the president sports record low Latin unemployment numbers and enthusiasm from most Latins over his stance on Venezuela? Nada. The Dems even botched the Dreamers deal, popular with Latins. Instead of action they fall back on their traditional playbook of screaming racism, ignoring the fact that Latins are not politically monolithic and as they increasingly do better economically, the Trump bogeyman argument will fall on deaf ears with many of them. Also, Latins are not a race. We are an ethnicity. Thus the effectiveness of playing the race card with us is not only negated by basic demographic facts, it’s insulting to many Latins who regard our ancestry as thoroughly Western European.
But that’s par for the course for our classically Red Dem pals. Use anyone they can to gain power by making up grievances and get the grievance wrong in the first place.
Let’s hope they keep dancing over this particular cliff all the way to Election Day 2020.
