Trump’s budget was released earlier this week and numerous items have caused significant debate. Of particular concern for many are the cuts to social welfare spending. These are the biggest drivers of the debt, but it gives many the chance to complain that Republicans don’t care about the poor and needy…and student loan forgiveness is a part of this outrage.
This is one part of a very big problem. The biggest problem is exploding tuition rates and the college-for-all craze. This ends up encouraging people to attend college, spending upwards of a quarter-million dollars on degrees that don’t help them land good jobs. For example, I remember a story where a student racked up $180,000 in student loans for a sociology degree. Even many of the more practical degrees are undermined by faddish gender, class, and race indoctrination instead of focusing on critical thought and good writing. So the degrees end up being glaringly worthless while also increasingly expensive.
Moreover, this student student loan forgiveness program is a lucrative benefit for public sector employees that already have lucrative benefits to begin with. Even The New York Times found that pensions and benefits for public sector employees are bankrupting cities and municipalities across the nation. Needless to say, the combination of pay and benefits means that this is a program that is not needed for public sector employees, despite their complaints about suffering and mean Republicans.
The bottom line is that potential students should be taught that there are many different options than going to college. As OpsLens readers and writers should know, trade schools and the military are a perfectly good option. Students that do attend college should be taught what reasonable loans to get for school are, and they should expect to land a job and pay them back.
