Maryland Sheriffs Refuse to Enforce Unconstitutional Laws

First Washington State, then New Mexico, and now Maryland. Law enforcement “minutemen” across our country are shouting, “The leftists are coming…the leftists are coming (for our guns),” and their fellow patriots in law enforcement are taking heed. A growing cadre of sheriffs, police chiefs, and conservative county councils around the nation are countering the neo-leftists’ onslaught of anti-Second Amendment laws.

According to Policeone.com, Wicomico County (MD) Sheriff Mike Lewis has told the state’s lawmakers that “if they pass legislation regulating ownership of rifles and shotguns: His office will not comply.” Hearing American law enforcement leaders support the U.S. Constitution never gets old.

Sheriff Lewis is concerned it will be impossible for gun owners to comply with the law. He also said, “I can’t send [my deputies] on a suicide mission [gun confiscation].”

Sheriff Lewis is referring to Maryland House of Delegates Bill 786. Lewis has said if any of the legislation requires his department to confiscate guns from law-abiding citizens, he will not do it. The law, which mandates rifles and shotguns be regulated like handguns, was proposed by Delegate Vanessa Atterbeary. Oh, in case you were wondering, she’s an anti-gun Democrat.

While the new law wouldn’t call for immediate gun confiscation, it reportedly allows the Maryland State Police to create regulations to do just that. The state could put people who violate the law in prison for five years and/or fine them $10,000.

Harford County (MD) Sheriff Jeffery R. Gahler has also joined Sheriff Lewis in opposing this new gun law. Lewis warns that dispatching officers to confiscate firearms from law-abiding citizens “will likely result in those citizens defending their rights and shooting officers.”

While it seems farfetched that Americans would shoot their fellow Americans, especially cops, the radical anti-gun agenda of the left is making incremental gun confiscation seem more probable with each passing law. Other sheriffs, police chiefs, and individual officers will have to make a choice. About confiscating guns from law-abiding citizens, Sheriff Lewis concluded, “It won’t happen on my watch.” I keep asking: What does the anti-gun left find so elusive about “shall not be infringed”?

Self-defense is a basic human right. Firearms are the best means to that defense. If you infringe on the people’s right to keep and bear arms, you infringe on the people’s right to self-defense. It’s frightening that some Americans do not believe this—or don’t care. Some don’t care because they don’t have guns. Well, what happens when the government comes after a law you do care about?

None of this is new for Sheriff Lewis. In 2014 (during the Obama administration), concerned about the federal government possibly confiscating citizens’ firearms, the sheriff bristled. He told News21 confiscation could lead to a civil war, and he would “never let the federal government confiscate weapons.”

As I’ve written many times, if the left wants to advance their socialist, anti-gun agenda, they’ll need the cops to do their dirty work. Frankly, I don’t think law enforcement officers, generally, will violate their oaths, which is what it would take for them to confiscate citizens’ arms. I’m just thankful there are cop leaders refusing to violate their oaths to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution and protect the rights of all Americans.
