Misrule Britannia

Ever watch a nation implode politically? I mean a civilized nation. Perhaps the most civilized and politically sophisticated nation in the record of man. A nation that has bequeathed to the world a treasure of philosophy, art, music, literature, and a history of advancing freedom beyond measure. A nation’s who’s Empire brought trade, security, education, and civilization to a quarter of the globe at one point not too distant in the past.

A nation from which this country springs.

Well, you wouldn’t know it looking at it today. This morning the UK is in the midst of a wholly avoidable political meltdown because of intentional lack of leadership at the very top and because the political class has done all it can to veto the verdict of the British people. Yes, we speak of bloody Brexit.

The latest news changes so quickly I’m wary of reporting it. But Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow, as we predicted last week in this column, is denying Prime Minister Theresa May a redundant third bite at the apple. Her soft Brexit plan has been turned down twice by friend and foe alike. It has to change before another vote can be held. PM May asked for a 90-day extension on the issue. She got it from Parliament.

The Euros then said, maybe. Between the lines? They said maybe, if the EU gets more of what it wants. Which is no real Brexit at all. Thus we could be looking at delayed Brexit, no Brexit, a general election after a no-confidence vote, a prorogued Parliament (It’s like a reboot. All the members stay in office. Just all recent business is wiped away. Then a new term begins fresh), or who the blazes knows what.

All the while government ministers are quitting left and right. Her own Conservative Party is in open rebellion. For different reasons, most want to see her go. What then does May do? She gives a speech last night blaming the Parliament and saying how personally upset she is that it turned out this way.

Bollocks to that.

She had every opportunity to adhere to the will of the voters and work for a proper Brexit. But ah, there’s the rub lads and lasses. She opposed Brexit when it was up for a vote. Then the idiot Tory Party, when the last PM resigned over his defeat on that vote, promoted her to PM to guide the process of leaving the EU, even though she didn’t want to leave in the first place.

It’s as if Trump made AOC the new head of DHS.

And here we are. The once shining mother of all legislatures, the British Parliament, reduced in essence to a squabbling, ineffective, stumbling bunch of toffs and proles united in one glorious goal: to screw the British people. This, from our staunchest ally.

The best solution to the mess?

Charles I, call your office. Only this time, Your Royal Majesty, get it right.
