Despite recent remarks by Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte about no longer wanting the U.S. in his country, the embattled leader has backtracked, now emphasizing that the U.S. is the county’s strongest ally.  Duterte continued by stating that his intentions were not to cease relations with the U.S., but rather continue to expand other relationships in the region, such as their blossoming friendship with China.

The U.S. has interests in the country due to its location and particularly because of the level of both extremist and drug activity.  U.S. intelligence and special operations advisors alike serve in the region to combat the aforementioned issues.
