A interesting twist has emerged in New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s plan for low-price state-run grocery stores: He’ll require ID to shop at the markets … but not to vote in city elections.
Politicians are spotlighting the double standard after a news conference in the Big Apple.
Former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt didn’t hold back.
“Racist Commie Mamdani is going to make you show ID in his markets. You want your government-subsidized arugula? Show your papers! Ask for ID to vote? BIGOT!!! Are you starting to realize what disingenuous lying buffoons these commies are?” posted Pratt.

Similarly, Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, ripped the mayor on X, saying, “ID to vote: Jim Crow!
“ID to buy groceries: Democratic Socialism!”
In the news conference, a reporter asked Mamdani what would prevent someone purchasing one of the low-cost “baskets” of 30%-discounted food and then selling it for a profit.
A city staff member responded, saying, “We are looking to make sure that we target New Yorkers … sort of a library card-esque thing.”
The socialist Mamdani says he plans to open one grocery store in each of New York’s five boroughs, with the first to open in 2027. The plan drawn widespread criticism and been compared to empty-shelved markets that were commonplace in the Soviet Union before its demise.
