Real vs Artificial Christmas Trees: Which is Best?

The biggest debate of the holiday season is real Christmas trees or artificial Christmas trees. The Christmas tree is the centerpiece of the holidays. People love to gather around the tree to decorate, watch Christmas movies and spend time together. Everyone has their preference for what type of Christmas trees they like to celebrate with, and every year people love to discuss which is better. If you are having trouble deciding on a real or fake tree, here are the advantages and disadvantages to each choice.

Artificial Trees Advantages:

  • Cost Savings: You can reuse an artificial tree year after year and save money on a tree every season.

  • Convenient: Fake trees offer the convince of getting to stay home and just drag the tree out of storage and set up. They also don’t require being watered everyday and doesn’t drop needles.

  • Safety: Since artificial trees don’t require being watered, they don’t dry out which can help prevent fires. They are also usually made from flame retardant materials.

  • Attractive: Most fake trees are made to look real if you want the look of a real tree without the hassle. They are also perfectly shaped trees.

  • Variety: Artificial trees come in some many different shapes, sizes, colors or designs. You can find one that is perfectly unique to fit your style.

Artificial Trees Disadvantages:

  • PVC Plastic: PVC plastics release dioxins over time which are toxic to humans and animals. PVC are non-biodegradable. Once the artificial tree is tossed out, it is stuck in a landfill forever. Artificial trees can not be recycled because of the plastic fibers that are fused and glued to the metal frame.

  • Made in China: Over 85% of all the fake trees sold in the U.S. come from China. The problem with this is that it contributes to the carbon footprint, but it’s always the better choice to buy local products.

Real Trees Advantages:

  • Smell: Real Christmas trees have a lovely pine scent it gives off. This smell is synonymous with Christmas time. It smells fresh and earthy. The smell is one of the favorite parts to get a real tree by most people.

  • Better for the Environment: Real Christmas trees are are easily recyclable and biodegradable as they are all natural plants. For every Christmas tree that is cut down, usually about one to three trees are planted in its place, so there is no concern for deforestation.

  • Fun: Getting the family all together and going out to a tree farm and picking out the perfect tree is a fun tradition that a lot of people cherish and look forward to every holiday season. It’s something that brings people together and can help reduce and relieve holiday stress.

  • Easily Assembled: Real Christmas trees are easy. There is no assembly required or fluffing the branches. The tree naturally settles to its shape by itself.

  • Unique: No two trees are the same. Every tree is unique and different. It’s nice to know that your tree is one of a kind. You also have the easy option to change it up every year.

Real Trees Disadvantages:

  • Cost: Since you can only use the trees once, the cost is a big disadvantage. Most trees are normally $30-$100 with larger trees in the upper $100 range. The main problem with this is a purchase that needs to be made every year.

  • High Maintenance: Although real Christmas trees are easy to set up, they are more difficult to maintain. They need to be watered continuously throughout the season and drop needles on the floor as well.
