You never know about people. Some folks should heed this caution, especially criminals. Metro News reported that on April 15, at about 4:37 a.m., two juvenile males entered a 7-Eleven in Martinsburg, WV. The suspects allegedly displayed handguns, pointed them at the clerk and a customer and demanded money.
The robbers had chosen their target poorly. The only customer in the store happened to be an off-duty cop. Berkeley County Sheriff Curtis Keller described the officer’s actions: “The patron, who was an off-duty officer at that time, backed away and drew his gun and identified himself to the two suspects. At which time they made a turn towards him and he fired at them, striking both of them.”
One wounded suspect fled the store. Berkeley County deputies captured him soon after their arrival. The off-duty officer detained the remaining (also wounded) suspect for responding deputies. Neither the store clerk nor the off-duty officer was injured.
Helicopters transported the suspects to two area hospitals for treatment. They were last listed in stable condition. According to the sheriff, deputies were processing the paperwork to file felony charges against the suspects.
The sheriff’s office did not release the names or ages of the suspects or the off-duty officer’s name and agency. Reportedly, the officer had been on his way to work. However, the sheriff reported the officer does not work for any law enforcement agency in Berkeley County.
I’m sure the 7-Eleven clerk was pretty pleased that off-duty officer just happened to pop in at that wee hour. If he hadn’t, things could have turned out so differently.
